Yet again Roxy le Roux found herself on her way to Maputo Mozambique this past weekend to judge the first official drift event for 2012 – Drift – Special Stage.

Drifters were again granted a few hours of practice on Saturday as a different part of the track was used this time around that included the hairpin corner around the top half of the track. The track layout was very tricky and very tight but made for good drifting and truly tested skill. Roxy later set out the clipping cones and the drifters were able to practice getting as close as possible. Read the rest of this entry →

Zanil Satar lights up

While it wasn’t hugely publicized and the South African contingent was rather small, the event held at the ATCM in Maputo, Mozambique was a great success. We’re going to skip on the full write-up and rather just give you some great pictures to look over, courtesy of SSP Productions. http://www.fotolog.com/suidique or http://www.youtube.com/user/sspproductns

Then of course we had the honour of playing host to the guys from Team Orange who had just wrapped up a 2-day drift school at The Rock Raceway (more on that later). Sleepy Furuse and Nogushige Kumakubo joined in the festivities as did Terry Grant, international stuntman.

Kumakubo wasn’t content with spectating and got in on the action, doing a demo run as well as two suicide rides before closing off the night with a tandem challenge of the nights winner, GWT’s Aubrey Hiles.

SA Drift went international this past weekend to join yet another drift event taking place in Maputo, Mozambique. Our very own Roxy le Roux went over to judge the event alongside two other local judges selected for the day.

Practice was granted to all drifters for the whole of Saturday to enable them to get comfortable with the track and Roxy later on in the day, set out clipping cones for the drivers to start practicing. This time around was a little more challenging for the drivers as the track layout was the same as the last event except it was reversed. Not long after the track was driven a few times and the placing of the cones familiarized were the drivers putting full throttle into the corners.

Sunday was competition day. It was thought that that the event would have had more entries but unfortunately due to the African Games also taking in place in Maputo, many of the roads were closed and resulted in drivers not be able to reach the track. They did manage to get 13 entries and would merely only run a Top 8 ladder after qualifying.

Drift Revolution

September 8, 2011 in Other, Upcoming Events

This weekend we’re heading off to Maputo, Mozambique again for the third time this year.

This time round, the event is dubbed ‘Drift Revolution’ and will take place at the kart circuit at the Autódromo de Maputo on Sunday 11 September.  Gates will open at 10am and entry is 200MT.

We’re expecting a large contingent of South African drivers from both the Japan Auto, Canival City and SupaDrift series’ crossing the border to compete against the likes of Zanil Satar, Richat Khan, Imtiaz Daly and the rest of the Maputo drifters on their home soil.

With the weather heating up it will be interesting to see how the newer faces handle the tough conditions and if their cars are up to the task.
