Japan Auto – The Home Stretch

November 7, 2011 in Japan Auto, Reports and Results, Upcoming Events

The sixth round of the Japan Auto Drift Championship for 2011 promised to be a spectacle of hard driving and nail biting action. It didn’t fail to deliver. The Rock Raceway was the playground, the cars would be making the noise.

A tight, technical track greeted the drivers early in the morning, many eager to get out on track and tame the beast. Starting with a long sweep past the Carnival City wall and then doubling back several times in a mountain pass-like fashion. Read the rest of this entry →

GWT Drift Matsuri – Parking Lot Mayhem

October 25, 2011 in Other, Reports and Results

We spent this past weekend in Kempton Park with the guys from the largest drift team in the county, GWT Racing, for a little bit of fun in the sun.

Sweltering heat didn’t deter the fans nor the drivers. Several drivers, including Chase Audagnotti (who easily spent 9hrs in the seat), Tim Stephens and Roelien du Toit entertained the crowds and took the brave out on suicide run. The low speed exhibition drifting did well to promote the sport and with the likes of Audagnotti and Aubrey Hiles showing what tandem drifting is about, I’d say they’re hooked for good.

Thanks to Gerald Small of Gerald Wheel and Tyre, Wayne from The Dros and Stompie from Cavendish Glen for the assistance on the day.

Best for us was watching the oldest suicide rider go round and have an absolutely great time. This sprightly lady comes in at 80-years old but that didn’t stop her from hopping into the passenger seat of Tim Stephen’s R33 Skyline – of her own accord!

Take a look at the video, albeit lengthy and unedited.

A Left-field Approach

Something has to be said about the ingenuity of this promo clip – but it’s not going to be me – I’m still laughing too hard!

This is brilliant! Well done!

There’s a few more of their Go!Animate creations over on their Youtube channel.

Of course, it is the third round of the Carnival City WOMZA Championships and we’re expecting quite a field. Word on the street is that some of the faces that haven’t competed at The Rock Raceway in a while will be back and in attendance.

JAPAN AUTO ROUND 2 – 2 APRIL – THE ROCK RACEWAY

April 4, 2011 in Drifting, Reports and Results

Saturday 03 April 2011 The Rock Raceway hosted the second round of The Japan Auto Series.

What started off as a hot, sunny day later turned around in a cloud burst that left a lot of people worried. Spectators were concerned that the races would be cancelled due to the rain. The beauty of drifting is that it is an all weather motor sport so it was easy to assure the spectators that racing will continue regardless. Worries were that spectators were going to be chased away by the rain but it was proven that drift spectators are true supporters and, come rain or snow, they will stick it through to the end.

Before qualifying rounds there was promise of 21 competitors but due to mechanical problems and the weather only 19 competitors remained to take part in qualifying. A late start to proceedings gave a few competitors the opportunity to fine tune and prepare their vehicle for what was to be a testing qualifying session. The half wet, half dry track tested the driver’s concentration with the wet sections catching many out. Two such competitors, Roelien du Toit and Imtiaz Dali fell prey to the damp sections and spun out on both their official qualifying runs, resulting in a zero score. They were not the only ones to suffer at the hand of the testing conditions. This resulted in a sudden death qualifying session for the two final spots in the top 16. Richard Holtzhausen secured the top spot in a brilliant display of concentration and discipline.

TOP GEAR FESTIVAL

March 24, 2011 in Drifting, Reports and Results, Top Gear Festival

Mother Nature can be a cruel mistress. ‘Raining on your parade’ has never been more apt than what it was for the drifting squad that geared up to put on a drifting display this past weekend at the Top Gear Festival.

The drivers descended on Kyalami Raceway on Thursday with the first practice session marked to take place later that evening. Exhibitors were still building stands and setting up displays by the time the punters finally made their way into the venue.
