Twilight Time For Japan Auto Series

November 29, 2011 in Drifting, Japan Auto

Ernest Simpson and David Nell

On the back of an exciting SupaDrift final, we cast our attention a little further East for the Japan Auto Series Final.

This weekend sees The Rock Raceway play host to the final installment of the Japan Auto Series for 2011. Drivers will descent on the Brakpan based track in a bid to secure as many points possible for one last time, hoping that their efforts will be enough to bump them up a place or three, while a select few aim for championship glory. SupaDrift 07 – Drifting In The Dark

October 17, 2011 in Reports and Results, SupaDrift, Upcoming Events

Story by Roxy le Roux
Photos by Arthur Hiscox

This past Saturday, Zwartkops witnessed its very first night event and who better to have claimed that title than the SupaDrift drifters. The very first night event with lighting set up to generators, was actually very well attended, with spectators staying right up until the end.

As with any event, there were some spanners in the works for some as we saw a few locals not drifting, some new faces, new cars and interesting end results.

On Friday night’s practice we saw Dean Williams take flame due to a nitrous related incident. The car was worked on to get it ready to compete on Saturday but unfortunately an injector fault put him out of the race. Jason Webb attacked the track in his new Nissan 200SX S13. We could see that he wasn’t completely comfortable in the car but with a bit more seat time and a few tweaks it’ll deliver a highly competitive Jason again. Jonathan Rudman also ran into some problems in his Speed and Sound Nissan 200SX but still competed. He took on the Speed and Sound Chev Lumina and managed to use that heavy car’s weight transfer to his advantage and managed the quite well. Chase Audagnotti graced us with the presence of his Nissan Skyline R33. It was initially thought that he wouldn’t compete in the Skyline due to three broken pistons on Friday but thanks to determination and team work, a brand new engine was purchased, put in and dyno’d by 12 o’clock on Saturday, giving the relieved Chase the opportunity to compete. Chase had been competing in the past 6 SupaDrift events in his naturally aspirated Nissan Silvia so seeing him in the Skyline proved that there is a lot more talent hiding in Chase. All that was needed was the right equipment. Adam Shefer, that has been out of action for around 4 months, was also at the event in his ALB / Kuston Ink 200SX and ready to prove to us what we have been missing.

Qualifying saw 24 drivers take to the tar to impress our judges and the results for the Top 16 were as follows:

1.   Adam Shefer      95.00
2.   David Nell       94.67
3.   Ernest Simpson   93.00
4.   Wade v Zummeren  91.33
5.   Jonathan Rudman  89.33
6.   Riaan Stokes     86.67
7.   Lee-Roy Frans    85.33
8.   Jim McFarlane    84.33
9.   Shaun Lamprecht  84.00
10. Hannes Frans      84.00
11. Mike Skelton      83.33
12. Vic Pardal        82.33
13. Mike Radloff      81.67
14. Rudi vd Berg      79.67
15. Jason Webb        78.00
16. Chase Audagnotti  77.00

Tandem runs and pairing were where things got interesting. The most interesting was the father / son battle between Hannes Frans (father) and Lee-Roy Frans (son). Going up against each other was going to be a tough thing to do but at least father and son knew that it was a competition and took it as ‘may the best driver win’. It was to be Lee-Roy who came out victorious and beat Hannes. Unfortunately for Lee-Roy, he not only walked away with victory over his father but booked himself some grounding time as well.

The Top 16 ladder also saw Ernest Simpson in his Drift Performance Parts Nissan Silvia loose to Rudi Van den Berg in his Falken Tyre / Gizocorp Mazda RX7. Upon initiation Van den Berg gave Simpson no room to switch as he neared the point of passing Simpson. When it came time to switch, Simpson was unable to do so as he would have hit Van den Berg and possibly caused more damage to both cars due to the impact so Simpson did the only thing he could, and that was loose complete drift, straight line and continue his drift once Van den Berg had overtaken him.

In the Top 16 eliminations we saw Rockstar Energy Drink’s Mike Skelton catch a lift to the judges box for the second time this year after he went harvesting and off track completely. Skelton went up against Turbo Toys’ Riaan Stokes but Stokes took victory in that tandem and was Skelton’s lift to the judge’s box.

The Top 8 eliminations saw a OMT between Ed Hardy Energy Drink’s David Nell and Lee Roy Frans which marked the first of 3 to come for Frans. The OMT time decision was that Frans was victorious and would go on to the Top 4.

Top 4 witnessed two OMT’s when Adam Shefer went up against Rockstar Energy Drink’s Wade van Zummeren and Frans went up against Van Den Berg. Van Zummeren called 5 minutes when judgment for an OMT was announced so that he could repair his exhaust. Judgment on the OMT came and it was decided that Van Zummeren had the advantage and went on to the finals.

Frans faced his second OMT against Van Den Berg after judges couldn’t decide who the better driver was.  However, Van Den Berg ran into some problems, resulting in him not being able to finish the race and Frans winning by default. Frans had gotten his wish. To compete against Van Zummeren.

3rd and 4th place finishes were obvious as Shefer took 3rd by default and Van Den Berg took 4th place.

The last and final race for the evening. Frans faced his third OMT when a decision couldn’t be made as to who had the advantage.

OMT!

Frans drove his heart out and we honestly think he was a little underestimated, being the age he is and especially driving the car he is driving. Nevertheless, Van Zummeren was victorious in the Rockstar Energy Drink / Achilles Tyres Nissan Skyline R33, taking 1st place and Frans walked away with 2nd place as well as the Mark Swartz floating trophy for the most spirit.

The first night event for SupaDrift was a good test for both organizers and drivers alike. Thanks goes to F1-X Performance Exhaust, Achilles Tyres, Turn1 Wheels, Speed and Sound Magazine and TyreTraders.co.za

2011 Carnival City Champion – Ernest Simpson

October 6, 2011 in Carnival City, Reports and Results

We know you’re itching to read all about the Team Orange Drift School and you will, soon. There are tonnes of photos to go through and it’s going to be quite something, but more on that later.

This past weekend also saw the 4th and final round of the Carnival City Drift Championship take place at The Rock Raceway. This prestigious affair carries with it the WOMSA title and a fair whack of prize money.

Chad gets Ernest's thoughts before the race.

Going into this final round, Team Drift Spec’s Ernest Simpson lead the championship race with 12 points, 5 points ahead of his nearest rival, Issufo Ussuman from Maputo Mozambique. With 5 points awarded for a win, Ussuman would have to take the outright win with Simpson failing to take any points whatsoever in order to tie the scores. Had this been the case, the decision would then be based on the highest placings throughout the season.

Ernest in the qualifying rounds.

It was not to be and Simpson took his Drift Performance Products / Tyre Rack Nigel Nissan S13 (that was rebuilt at the beginning of the year if you remember correctly) to the semi finals, finishing in 4th to net himself 2 points and place him in the clear. This gave him the overall Carnival City Championship win and the title of WOMSA 1. GWT Racing’s Aubrey Hiles secured second overall thanks to a 4th round win placing him ahead of Issufo Ussuman who claimed third.

An additional honour came when Nobushige Kumakubo and Sleepy Furuse asked if they could award them with their trophies. A once in a lifetime opportunity just to sweeten the experience.

A hearty congratulations goes out to him and his team on their prime performance this year.

Ernest would like to thank:

“DRIFT Performance product.

And a huge thanks to Hannes Frans and he’s team for all the work!”

Then of course we had the honour of playing host to the guys from Team Orange who had just wrapped up a 2-day drift school at The Rock Raceway (more on that later). Sleepy Furuse and Nogushige Kumakubo joined in the festivities as did Terry Grant, international stuntman.

Kumakubo wasn’t content with spectating and got in on the action, doing a demo run as well as two suicide rides before closing off the night with a tandem challenge of the nights winner, GWT’s Aubrey Hiles.

Encore! – One More Time! Carnival City Finals

October 3, 2011 in Carnival City, Reports and Results, Upcoming Events

The final round of the 2011 Carnival City Drift Championship took place this past weekend at The Rock Raceway. There was one difference this time around though… We had a grand finale!!!

We were joined by two very well known, respected and highly regarded people; Hiroki ‘Sleepy’ Furuse, Team manager for Team Orange and international drift judge as well as 2006 D1GP champion, Nobushige Kumakubo, owner of both Team Orange and Ebisu circuit.

Terry Grant and Nobishige Kumakubo

With 20 competitors entered, qualifying runs were ready to roll and ready for their close ups, each going out there to get the highest score possible.  Unfortunately, there were drivers that DNQ (did not qualify) or DNS (did not start) due to spin outs and / or mechanical failure but we had our Top 16.

The Top 16 were as follows:

Richat Khan                        -              93.00

Ernest Simpson                 -              90.00

Aubrey Hiles                      -              88.33

Zanil Satar                           -              86.66

Riaan Stokes                      -              85.00

Tim Stephens                    -              77.33

Shaun Cornelius               -              76.33

Issufo Usseman                -              72.66

Imtiaz Dali                          -              72.33

Roelien du Toit                 -              72.00

Chase Audagnotti            -              70.33

Fredrick Cooper Jnr        -              70.00

Corne Pretorius                -              66.33

Joshua Beyleveldt           -              50.00

B.G. Smit                             -              45.33

Dennis Palm                      -              26.00

Welcoming some new faces to the ladder, tandems battles were ready to commence and we kicked things off with our first pairing, Richat Khan in his Pearl Nissan Silvia S15 going up against Dennis Palm in his Nissan Skyline GTX. Unfortunately Palm spun out and the win went to Khan who went on to the next round.

Next up saw Issufo Ussuman in his Nissan Skyline R33 paired up against Imtiaz Dali in his Toyota Soarer. Ussuman had the advantage and went on to the next round. Thereafter, a mistake from Fredrick Cooper Jnr in his rotary powered MkII Ford Escort gave Riaan Stokes in his Turbo Toys / K&L Nissan 200SX the advantage as well as the win.

Zanil Satar in the Nissan Skyline R34 and Corne Pretorius in his Nissan Skyline R33 were paired next. A spin from Pretorius cost him his race and saw Satar progress to the next round.  However, the next pairing was interesting. Tim Stephens in his Nissan Skyline R33 went up against Chase Audagnotti in his Nissan Skyline R33. Stephens had the advantage in the first run but luck turned for Audagnotti when straight lining from Stephens gave Audagnotti the advantage and a 1 point lead. Enough to make it through to the next round.

Aubrey Hiles in his GWT / Sonar Tyre S13 Nissan 200SX lined up to tandem battle against Joshua Beyleveldt in his S13 Nissan 200SX. As a result of straight-lining from Beyleveldt, Hiles took victory and progressed through to the Top 8.

Shaun Cornelius, in his GWT Toyota Soarer, was paired up against Roelien du Toit in her Nissan Skyline R33 and she wasn’t going to make things easy for him. Both runs were extremely close and at the end of the tandem, 1 point separated them. The advantage went to Cornelius when du Toit straight lined and lost 1 point which declared Cornelius the winner.

The last paring for the Top 16 was Ernest Simpson in his Nissan Silvia S13 against BG Smit in his Nissan 200SX. Again a spin cost a driver a victory and that was the case here when Smit spun out and Simpson went on to the next round.

It was at this time that the entertainment changed up a little from the usual fare offered. International stunt driver, Terry Grant  blew the crowd away with death defying driving while behind – and not behind – the wheel of the LiquiMoly Legend racecar. Spinning around its axis, the Legend was left unmanned while Terry entertained the crowd. It was then joined by Terry in a second Legend car in counter rotating donuts.

Nobishige Kumakubo amazed all when he did a demonstration run in Khan’s S15 Silvia. Precision driving and a healthy dose of speed set a standard that many would aspire to throughout the rest of the night. Two suicide rides were also carried out – the first with drift nutter Marietjie Barnard in the hot seat and the other with MC Chad Luckhoff relaying the information to all and sundry. Excitement at its finest.

In the Top 8, the first pairing was Khan and Ussuman. Yet another spin claimed a driver’s run when Ussuman spun out in the 2nd tandem run allowing Khan to move onto Top 4. We then saw Stokes and Satar go up against each other and then gave each other a good run. It was however a straight-line from Satar that saw his chances of progressing foiled and Stokes claiming a spot in the Top 4.

Thereafter Audagnotti was faced with Hiles. Hungry for victory, Audagnotti held up well but Hiles had the higher advantage and straight-lining from Audagnotti saw Hiles take the win. It was Cornelius and Simpson that showed how much they wanted that last Top 4 slot. So much so, that the 1st tandem race was called for OMT (one more time). The OMT was the decider as Cornelius straight lined and Simpson clutched at the last spot. In the greater scheme of things, this was all Simpson had to do to claim the championship for 2011. With a 5-point lead going into this round, he merely had to score a single point in order to set himself far enough ahead not to be caught.

We entered the Top 4 elimination round and the lineup proved to be an entertaining one. We had Khan against Stokes and Hiles against Simpson. Khan and Stokes proved it so entertaining that we saw two OMT’s  run between these drivers.  In the final OMT, we saw Stokes loose his drift and straight line, which was the tie-breaker between the drivers giving Khan the win and the spot into the finals. Simpson saw his finals spot get very dim when he lost his drift and straight lined which meant that Hiles had won and earned his spot in to the finals for 1st and 2nd.

Semi finals were run first and had Stokes and Simpson battle it out for 3rd and 4th place. This paring saw themselves also face a OMT. What could’ve been a nasty accident was actually very well avoided from Stokes. As Simpson exited the last corner and went in for the home stretch to the finish line, we saw Simpson nearly overcook it but corrected it by coming off of the power and correcting it. But at that Stokes was barreling into the last stretch and nearly didn’t see Simpson. The only way not to hit Simpson was to spin out and Stokes did exactly. Due to Simpson’s straight line, Stokes took advantage and was declared 3rd place winner with Simpson taking 4th.

Last but not least our finals had come. Hiles vs Khan. Two forces not to be reckoned with and here they were, face to face. Both drivers were so equally matched but unfortunately Khan lost the plot when he straight lined. Hiles had 1 point advantage and that was enough for him to secure the win and take 1st place!

Hiles climbed out of the car in front of the stands and thanked GWT, Sonar Tyres and Monster Motorsport for helping him take this win but as it was to be, his night was not over. With a single announcement, the crowd U-turned and packed against the fence. Hiles had just been challenged by Kumakubo.

Kumakubo led first and Hiles did well to maintain a close gap and even apply pressure from time to time. The true thrill cam in when Kuma was following and diving into the first corner, initiated simultaneously and remained there for the entire run.

Without any prompting, the stands erupted with collective chant of “One More Time” to which both drivers agreed to. Even closer this time round, the crowd could not contain their excitement any longer. In the second last switch, the two cars came so close that a race rub resulted in both cars losing their bumpers and exiting the track in a plume of tyre smoke. A better ending one could not have scripted.

A massive thanks goes to CarnivalCity, The Rock Raceway, Team Orange, Sleepy Furuse, Nobushige Kumakubo and Terry Grant for a fantastic event.

Congratulations to Ernest Simpson on taking the championship for Team Drift Spec, Drift Performance Parts and Nigel Tyre Traders.
