SupaDrift 5 Doesn’t Fail to Deliver

August 29, 2011 in Drifting, Reports and Results, SupaDrift, Upcoming Events

This weekend’s SupaDrift round will go down in the books as one of the most hotly contested event ever witnessed on SA soil.

Clear skies and warm temperatures saw an additional influx of spectators at Zwartkops Raceway and with 27 entries for this fifth round of the SupaDrift series; they were treated to some of the best drifting action available.

This round was a critical one for most with the championship door left wide open and the security guard fast asleep. This was due to the absence of the Kimberley based Monstermob team. With Otto Graven competing on the same day in Las Vegas in the Formula Drift Series and Ronnie Graven wrapped up in work commitments, the podium seemed a little more accessible than usual. Jason Webb was still competing though and it would be a trying one for the young championship leader.

Then and Now

July 21, 2011 in Drifting

Drift cars evolve. Fact.

We’ve seen some wicked transformations over the years and looking back it’s quite a journey.

Some have just gone the sponsor route while others have rebuilt numerous times. More often than not it’s the evolution of the sport that forces the drivers to go bigger, faster and more edgy. The additional TV coverage has seen some ripping examples grace the drift circuits.

The latest is the Nissan S13 200SX of Riaan Stokes, who is now sporting some new Turbo Toys branding (time to update his profile) and a special front end. Nice one Riaan!

Now:

Otto Graven is also guilty. Take a gander at the new look he’ll be sporting for this week’s Formula Drift round in Monroe, Washington.

Then:

Now:

Wade van Zummeren has had a signage transformation.

Then:

Now:

Rudi van den Berg’s car has remain much the same, but it’s the branding that elevates it to a new level.

Otto Graven Formula Drift – Update / Build

July 14, 2011 in Drift Builds

For those of you stuck under a rock, Otto Graven has been in the USA for the last few months, mixing it up with the US Formula Drift crowd in a bid to make his mark as the Rookie of the Year.

His initial project, the V8 350Z didn’t pass their stringent inspection and forced him to compete with the Turbo 350Z backup car he took along. He’s lucky that he in fact had a spare car available.

With the mid-season break, Otto and his crew of Speedy Webb and John ‘Afroslide’ Coetzee took about transforming the Turbo Z into a worthy competitor. Not an easy task, especially when you’re miles away from your home and your workshop.

What follows is the transplant of the Chevrolet Corvette Le Mans C5R motor into the Turbo Z33 chassis. Read the rest of this entry →

FORMULA DRIFT 4 – THE WALL, NJ.

June 17, 2011 in Drifting

Monstermob’s Otto Graven will be competing this weekend, not at the local SupaDrift event, but rather at the Formula Drift event at The Wall, New Jersey.

From Formula Drift:

Formula DRIFT Returns to Wall Speedway

First opening in 1950 as Wall Stadium, Wall Speedway as it’s now known will host Round 4: The Gauntlet on June 17-18, 2011.

The track lives up to its moniker as the “Gauntlet” with a 16 degree banked oval along the straightaway and 30 degrees on the turns. The drivers will be challenged on this course and this track is the first on the schedule where drivers utilize the entire oval. This course is very tricky and many drivers have fallen victim to the degree of difficulty that the bank, straightaway, and inside turn creates. Each seat in the house has a great view of the action within the “bowl” and fans will not be disappointed. Read the rest of this entry →

SUPADRIFT – ZWARTKOPS – 19 FEBRUARY

February 22, 2011 in Drifting, Reports and Results

Zwartkops raceway hosted the 1st of 7 events on Saturday 19 February and honestly, if the remaining 6 events in this series are anywhere near what it was this weekend, then we are in for some nail biting, adrenalin pumping oversteer. Zwartkops entertains all areas of motorsport from circuit racing, go-kart racing, superbike racing to driver training, magazine testing and recently… drifting.

What looked to be an overcast and rainy day turned out to be somewhat cloudy but warm. Ideal track condition if ever you were able to call the order in.

It was still early when we arrived so the pits seemed bare and not much sign of any activity. We waited around for a couple of minutes and at around 08:00 Chad headed off for drivers briefing. I went out and had a look at what the track had in store.
