East London Drift Practice

September 8, 2011 in Other, Upcoming Events

For those not attending the Mozambique event, and those situated in the Eastern Cape, there’s still some drift action going down this weekend for you at the East London Grand Prix Circuit.

The local drifters are running a fund raising drift practice event to raise some much needed funds to upgrade the track. This will help bring the track up to spec and allow for future events to be held at this great venue.

You’ll be able to ride shotgun in a suicide ride in either one of the spec drift cars or a street legal variant for a small fee. It’s a great way to experience the thrill of drifting first hand. If you’re wanting to go in one of the competition cars it will cost you R150 while a suicide ride in one of the street drift cars will set you back R100. That’s small money for the experience of a lifetime. Entry to the event is a minimal R20 per car.

Gates will open on Sunday 11 September and will end when the tyres are finished.

With enough support, the upgrades will see future SupaDrift and other drift events take place in East london, possibly as soon as next year.

Drift Revolution

September 8, 2011 in Other, Upcoming Events

This weekend we’re heading off to Maputo, Mozambique again for the third time this year.

This time round, the event is dubbed ‘Drift Revolution’ and will take place at the kart circuit at the Autódromo de Maputo on Sunday 11 September.  Gates will open at 10am and entry is 200MT.

We’re expecting a large contingent of South African drivers from both the Japan Auto, Canival City and SupaDrift series’ crossing the border to compete against the likes of Zanil Satar, Richat Khan, Imtiaz Daly and the rest of the Maputo drifters on their home soil.

With the weather heating up it will be interesting to see how the newer faces handle the tough conditions and if their cars are up to the task.

Will It Debut This Weekend?

September 2, 2011 in Drift Builds

This weekend sees the fifth round of the Japan Auto Series take place at The Rock Raceway. Sunny skies and a clear forecast sets the stage for a cracking drift session between the walls of the Brakpan based track.

We’re hoping that we’ll see the debut of this new beast. We don’t want to reveal too much as to the origin of this car, but what we can tell you is that this time round, the owner has taken a different approach to this build.

Gone is the sound install and streetability of this Nissan Skyline R33 and in it’s place is a dedicated competition car with lightweight panels, drift engineered suspension and a focus on setup. The interior has been stripped and unnecessary weight removed to make the most of the powerplant.

This is where this new machine takes a left turn and breaks the rules somewhat. The focus hasn’t been on outright power this time round – instead, the ‘Liner is powered by a stock RB25DET in the name of reliability and smooth power delivery.

Here’s hoping…
